Three Arrested in Church Burglary

Two men and juvenile have been arrested in connection with the burglary of a Huntington Station church. Officers responded to an alarm at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at approximately 2am Wednesday morning. Police discovered broken windows and other damage at the scene. A canine unit led the cops to a house over a mile away from the church to a house on Brompton Avenue. There police found Javier Hernandez, 21, Edwin Diaz-Hernandez, 16, and a 15-year-old whose name has not been released. The three men were arrested on charges of burglary and criminal mischief.

Life Saving Cop Strikes Again

A Suffolk County police officer saved the life of a woman on Tuesday, making her the third person he has resuscitated in two weeks. James Garside, an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, brought back the heartbeat of a woman having a heart attack in Huntington on Tuesday. Early this year on January 19, Garside was one of three officers who helped save an overdose victim outside of a diner in which they had been eating. Five days later he helped revive a heart attack victim.

Fourteen Boats Destroyed in Marina Blaze

A fire tore through a Freeport boat yard Wednesday after a vessel exploded while two men worked on the motor of a dry-docked boat just before 4pm. The fire spread to nearby boats, destroying fourteen and causing less serious damage to six others. Roughly 200 firefighters from eight departments responded to the blaze, battling it for almost two hours. Nearby, upwind residents could feel the heat from the flames from their front doors. Both of the men working on the boat sustained serious burns to their faces, arms and hands and have been hospitalized.

Malverne Mel and Holtsville Hal Say Spring is on the Way

Punxsutawney Phil prognosticated that we’ll be seeing another six weeks of winter this year, but a local forecaster dares to disagree. Malverne Mel is in consensus with Phil however, Holtsville Hal is calling for an early spring. The spring/winter mix of temperatures the Island has been experiencing this season makes an early spring more plausible than another six weeks of winter. Temperatures reached as high as 62 degrees for the second time since December 1 on Wednesday at Islip-MacArthur Airport. This also made for the second straight day of record highs on Long Island, according to the Nation Weather Service. With no snow on the horizon maybe Phil and Mel meant wintery weather would peak its head after this weekend. Predictions of cold air and below 40 temperatures have been made for next week.
