As far as non-self New Year’s resolutions go volunteering is top tier. Nothing heals the soul more than giving back to the world which gives to you. There is a myriad of opportunities to volunteer on a global scale as well as in your local community. Many non-profit organizations run solely and rely heavily on help from volunteers. Without them the things we love may lie in shambles. Surely there is a volunteering opportunity out there that either meets your interests (such as volunteering at an animal shelter if you’re an animal lover or at your local library if you’re an avid reader). Review the following list and considering giving your time, even if it may only be a few hours a week out of your busy schedule.

    The LI Volunteer Center is an all-volunteer agency who supports, promotes and advocates volunteer services on Long Island. It is Long Island’s resource for volunteerism and community service opportunities.

 

  1. Habitat for Humanity, Nassau County, 1421 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset – (516) 674-0982
    Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that seeks to address affordable housing needs by providing simple and affordable homes for hard working low income families in Nassau County. Volunteers participate at build sites (no experience needed), make or buy and deliver lunch to site workers, serve on a committee, assist at special events, answer phones or office email and photography important events.

    Volunteers for Wildlife is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Long Island’s wildlife and natural habitats. They own and operate a Wildlife Hospital and Education Center at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Volunteers help out in all areas of wildlife rehabilitations from helping out in the office to rescuing and caring for wildlife in the clinic. In-house training is offered as are special workshops.

By volunteering your can make a large and positive impact on a child’s life.

 

  1. Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, 371 East Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown – (631) 930-9000
    Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind offers several volunteer programs with flexible hours including Puppy Walkers who give four-legged friends a loving home until they are old enough to enter the training program; Kennel Volunteers who provide socialization and interaction, grooming, and leash-walking; Class Volunteers who spend time with blind and visually-impaired students while they take a break from working with their guide dogs, often going on fun adventures to local spot and attractions; and Office Volunteers who perform tasks around the office during the day.

    STAR Foundation is in need of volunteers who are willing to rescue and transport animals between veterinarians and the rehabilitation specialists. Classes are offered each Spring to train those interested in animal rescue. Volunteers are also needed to build cages, bat houses, and nest boxes, plan fundraising events, and provide foster homes.

    Make-A-Wish Foundation works to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, enriching their life with hope, strength and joy. Volunteers work with the families of Make-A-Wish qualified children, coordinate activities, write press releases, and so much more.

    Wantagh-Levittown VAC provides emergency care on ambulances staffed with advanced life support providers and 911 responders.Volunteers are trained in CPR to Paramedic level. Experience is not necessary in order to volunteer.

    SCCADV assists and empowers victims of domestic abuse through a wide range of services and working towards the prevention of domestic violence. Volunteers handle hotline calls, provide creative playtime for children, assist the staff with chores, sort donations, assist advocates with basic research and conference planning, assist with education presentations, answer phones and emails, and so much more!

    Literacy Suffolk recruits and trains volunteers to tutor Suffolk County adults in Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Volunteers must have a high school diploma and attend a 15-hour tutor training workshop.
