Garden City Tragedy: Man Charged Under Leandra's Law After DUI Crash Injures Young Child

Ruben Gonzalez was arrested in Garden City for DUI and child endangerment after crashing his car and injuring a child.

Driving While Intoxicated (Leandra’s Law) on Monday, January 1, 2024 at 7:03 PM in Garden City.
 
According to detectives, officers responded to a 911 call for an auto accident in the vicinity of Cherry Valley Avenue and 10 th Street. The male operator was traveling northbound on Cherry Valley Ave. in a 2023 Cadillac Escalade when he struck a tree.
 
A subsequent investigation was conducted and Ruben Gonzalez, 41, was placed under arrest without incident. The female front passenger, 37, with the defendant’s three children (ages 4, 9, and 11), were transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment. The 4-year-old female suffered a minor back injury.
 
Defendant Gonzales is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, three (3) counts of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Child under 16) under the Leandra’s Law, three (3) counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Laws. He will be arraigned on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at First District Court, Hempstead.
