Looking for something fun to do on a cold Winter’s day? Why not browse the bookshelves at your local independent bookstore! Here on Long Island, while there are many chain locations of bookstores, like Barnes and Noble, spread across the Island, there are also a handful of independent bookstores spread across the Island! Nowadays it’s difficult for independent bookstores to stay in business with competition from larger retail chains, online commerce, and e-books/e-readers, but by shopping at your local bookstore you can help keep these local landmarks alive & open!

Many of the independent bookstores on Long Island also provide great opportunities to kids! The Dolphin Bookshop, Book Revue and BookHampton all have fantastic children’s sections, educational programs and regular children’s events that they schedule during the year.

Whether you’re looking to spend a quiet day scanning the shelves for new reading material, looking for something to keep the kids occupied for an afternoon, or planning a fun day out out on the town with friends and looking for places to stop by, these local Long Island bookstores are a great option for all!
