Students everywhere are becoming more interested in environmental issues, including Arjun Bindra of Glen Head, NY. He was one of five students who were recently awarded the Nobel Good Earth Sustainability Scholarship, given by National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). This award recognizes students who actively share their dedication to conservation, sustainability, environmental policy, and preservation of the Earth.

A senior at Jericho High School, Arjun created Evergreen, a program that reduces food waste in schools. He developed an app that collects data from students on what foods in their school lunch they enjoy and what they typically throw out so the lunch menu can be adjusted to help eliminate waste. On the app, users also learn about modern food systems, like sustainable agriculture and food deserts. Evergreen also repurposes unused food in a compost garden on school grounds. The fruits and vegetables grown there are used in the school's FACS and cooking classes or are donated to local soup kitchens.

NSHSS, the organization that awarded Arjun the scholarship, is the premier honors and scholarship program co-founded by Claes Nobel and James Lewis. It offers a lifetime of benefits, pairing the highest performing students worldwide with high school and college scholarships, events, connections, internships, and career opportunities.
