Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders quarantined at Montauk Point back in 1898 after fighting the Spanish in Cuba. At first, conditions were no better than the battlefields in Cuba but a public outcry and investigation led to improvements including the construction of two hospitals and an electrical power plant.
