Lake Ronkonkoma, NY - July 22, 2015 - Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a bicyclist in Lake Ronkonkoma last evening.
Laura Heerbrandt, 23, was driving a 2014 Nissan eastbound on Portion Road when her vehicle struck a male bicyclist who had swerved into her lane of traffic as he was traveling westbound on Portion Road.
Luis Benitez, 51, of Bohemia, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Heerbrandt, of Ronkonkoma, was not injured.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crash to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
