NCPD: Bay Shore Man Arrested after Fleeing Traffic Stop with Officer Standing on Vehicle's Running Board

The Seventh Squad reports the arrest of a Bay Shore man for an Assault that occurred on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 7:43pm in Massapequa.
 
According to Detectives, Officers observed a white  Ford Econoline van travelling east at a high rate of speed on Sunrise Highway at the intersection of Louden Avenue. Officers conducted a Vehicle and Traffic Law stop and instructed the male driver to place the vehicle into the park position, he did not.  
 
For Officers safety, the Officer stepped onto the running board and reached through the open window in an attempt to place the vehicle in park. At that time the driver stepped on the gas and drove away with the Officer still standing on the running board. The driver disregarded the Officer’s instructions to stop the vehicle, committed multiple traffic infractions before the van left the roadway going onto the sidewalk and struck a fence on Clocks Boulevard.  
 
The male driver attempted to flee through the passenger’s door but was apprehended by Officers. The male driver, Defendant Dennis Zvonik, 43, of 16 Krause Street was violently and actively resisting arrest but was placed into custody at 7:43pm. Along with a female front passenger, 49, the Defendant’s son, 12, was seated in an improper seat without a seatbelt in the rear of the van.  
 
The Officer was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of minor abrasions, contusions and lacerations. The Defendant was transported to a local area hospital for evaluation and his vehicle was impounded at the scene. No further injuries were reported.
 
Defendant Dennis Zvonik is charged with Assault 2nd Degree, two counts of Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree, Resisting Arrest and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.  He will be arraigned on Friday, July 21, 2023 in First District Court 99 Main Street Hempstead.
 
Subsequent to the investigation it was determined that the Defendant was driving with a suspended license and also has an active bench warrant from Nassau County.
