Local students got a chance to learn about the aquatic ecology and biology that surrounds their home island aboard the Soundwaters, an 80-foot, three-master schooner with a mission to educate children about the environment.

During the two-hour cruise, kids got to learn about the local habitat and biodiversity of the Long Island Sound and helped sail the ship by raising and lowering the sails.

Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner was on board the SoundWaters at the Town of Brookhaven’s Port Jefferson Marina to wish a “bon voyage” to Shoreham Wading River 5th graders prior to their learning cruise in June.

Bonner secured the docking rights at the marina and spoke with the students before their trip.

“Sailing is a great way for children to learn about the natural beauty of the Long Island Sound,” she said. “After a difficult school year, it was great to see the smiles of excitement as the children shoved off on such a beautiful day.”
