At a recent general meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Sarah Anker congratulated Kaitlyn Pineiro, a now 7th grade student at the Longwood School District, for winning the Suffolk County 2020 “Be Pool Smart” Poster Contest. Kaitlyn’s poster will be featured on the front page of the 2021 Suffolk County Health Services Department’s Pool Safety and Drowning Prevention brochure alongside this year’s 2021 poster contest winner, Anndrea Pumay, a 3rd grade student at JFK Elementary School. Legislator Anker also congratulated Layla Trapani, a Coram Elementary School 3rd grade student, who won second place in the 2021 “Be Pool Smart” Poster Contest.

“Congratulations to Kaitlyn Pineiro for winning the 2020 “Be Pool Smart” Poster Contest,” said Legislator Anker. “Congratulations also to Layla Trapani for getting second place in this year’s poster contest. Kaitlyn and Layla both created beautifully artistic and informative posters to raise awareness about the importance of pool safety in Suffolk County. Thank you to all the students who participated in this year’s and last year’s poster contest. I always look forward to seeing all the creativity and talent that comes from our local schools.”

Each year, as established in Introductory Resolution 1825-2007, the Suffolk County Legislature hosts the “Be Pool Smart” poster contest educational campaign to promote pool safety, help inform students and residents about ways to safely enjoy pools while preventing incidences of drowning. Students from across the county are asked to participate by creating a poster with relevant pool safety tips. One student’s work is selected to be featured on the front page of the Suffolk County Health Services Department’s Pool Safety and Drowning Prevention brochure.
