John Romita Sr, Co-creator of Characters Wolverine and Mary Jane, Spider Man’s Love Interest, Who Lived on Long Island, Dies at 93

John Romita Sr who worked alongside other iconic comic creators like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby has died. He was 93-years-old.

 

Marvel Comics announced the news saying that Romiita Sr was “was a pillar of the Marvel Universe.” Romita Sr’s son John Romita Jr followed in his fathers footsteps. The younger Romita - who lives in Port Jefferson - co-created the alternative Kick-Ass series of comics that became a movie that spawned a sequel.

 

At the time of his death, Romita Sr lived in Floral Park.

 

Romita Sr announced the news of his father’s death to the public on Twitter calling him “the greatest man I ever met.”

 

John Romita Sr had a lifetime career in comics that led him to Marvel. He was an early illustrator of Spider Man, whose concept of the character became the popular version we all know and love. He also created the character of Mary Jane, the webslinger’s love interest. Romita Sr co-created many of the comic world’s most iconic (and lucrative) characters including The Punisher, Wolverine and Luke Cage.

 

Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios said he was an “incomparable artist.” 

 

“His version of Spider-Man has inspired so many of us at Marvel Studios,” he said.
