Taxi Driver Seriously Injured in Motor Vehicle Crash with Bus

Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a Centereach man last evening.

Bohemia, NY - May 21st, 2014 - Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured a Centereach man last evening.

Michael Lupo was driving a 2003 Ford for Islandwide Taxi eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway when his vehicle struck the rear of a Suffolk County Transit bus that was stopping for a red light at Orville Drive at 6:52 p.m.  

Lupo, 33, who was treated at the scene by members of the Community Ambulance Company of Sayville, was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is being treated for severe leg and chest injuries.

Cecilia Ortiz-Lopez, 65, of Babylon, the driver of the bus, and a male passenger were not injured. The bus was inspected at the scene by the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Section. The taxi was impounded for a safety check.
 
The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
