America’s VetDogs Long Island Run & Dog Walk

We all know that dogs love going on walks more than anything, but how about taking them on walks for a good cause? America’s VetDogs is an organization that has trained and placed guide and service dogs to provide independence and companionship to veterans with disabilities. As such, the organization will be hosting its 5th Annual Long Island Run & Dog Walk this summer to raise awareness and funds to help continue their work. It will be taking place on Saturday, July 27, in Cedar Creek Park where you can either register to compete in the 5K or take a nice stroll with your leashed pooch along the two-mile trail. The whole family can come on down and enjoy this event while also contributing to an awesome cause.

Fire Island

Fire Island is considered to have one of Long Island’s most beautiful beaches and is a must-see for any native or tourist, and of course your canine friend. If you have a private boat or take a dog-friendly ferry to the interior of the 32-mile long island, dogs are allowed on any non-ocean, non-lifeguarded patch of sand from March 15 through Labor Day. Take your pooch on one of their most amazing walks ever and enjoy some of the best breathtaking views that Fire Island has to offer. Who knows, by the end of it, you may be calling it Fido Island.

Gardiner County Park

This beautiful 230-acre park is made up of beautiful nature trails and water access to the Great South Bay. Located in Bay Shore, the park is one of New York’s truly dog-friendly destinations with wide running areas for dogs, a special canine loop and lots of doggie water drinking stations. Take in the beauty of the park by walking along the beach trail to where Fido can play and swim in the Bay. It also features a picnic area, playground and gazebo for the rest of the family to enjoy.

Coindre Hall

Your dogs will have an adventure of their own as you take them to a real Gold Coast mansion on the water at Coindre Hall located in Huntington. This 100-year old mansion offers 33 acres of open fields for dogs to play on a leash. While your pet exercises, feel free to take in some of the views that the French chateau-style mansion has to offer.

Shadmoor State Park

Named for its open, rolling geography and the shadbush that grows there, Shadmoor State Park has a lot to offer for both you and Fido. The park boasts freshwater wetlands, hiking trails and elevated platforms for bird watching and enjoying the shoreline views. You will not see anything but the perfect blue sky above as you and Fido hike through beach heather and open bluffs to reach some awesome views and historical hot spots. Although a bit of a drive if you do not reside in Montauk, it proves to be an unforgettable adventure for owners and canines alike.
