Suffolk County Legislator and Congressional Candidate Bridget Fleming released the following statement on the passage of gas tax relief by the Suffolk County Legislature.

Fleming said, “Families are struggling, and we, as their elected representatives, need to respond to this pressing need and work to provide as much relief as possible. The County Legislature must continue to support legislation that benefits working people and provides economic relief in these uncertain times. As a member of Congress, I will be a champion for working families on Long Island and work to direct resources to provide much-needed relief.’

The resolution passed by the Legislature today with Fleming’s support provides that the County’s 4.25% sales tax will only be applied to gas sales up to $3 per gallon and that any cost above $3 per gallon will not be subject to County sales tax. This is in addition to measures in the recently-enacted New York State budget which will provide additional relief.

The measure will not adversely impact the current County budget as revenues from a tax on $3 per gallon are projected to meet or exceed amounts budgeted for this fiscal year. The measure will take effect June 1 and sunset on December 31 of this year.
