Mastic Beach, NY - April 18, 2018 - William Floyd High School senior Sandra Vivar Marin has been selected to receive the prestigious St. Joseph’s College Presidential Scholarship, a full-tuition grant covering all four years of undergraduate college worth more than $100,000. Sandra has been accepted into the nursing program and will begin in the fall semester of 2018. She is one of only 11 students selected for this prestigious award.
At William Floyd, Sandra has excelled academically and as a student athlete. She is currently ranked No. 9 in her class of 607 students with a 99.524 weighted grade point average, is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society, and a recipient of the Town of Brookhaven Hispanic Heritage Award. She has also served as a yearbook editor for all four years in high school and is a member of the newly-formed Medical Club.
As a student athlete, Sandra has earned Academic All-County, All-League and All-County awards as a winter and spring track athlete, serving as the captain of her teams during her junior and senior years.
Additionally, as someone who is bilingual, she has helped read to younger children enrolled in the ENL program through the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library.
“It was an honor and privilege to nominate Sandra for the Presidential Scholarship at St. Joseph’s College,” said Dana Garner, Sandra’s high school guidance counselor. “She is a student who embodies the St. Joseph’s College motto, ‘Esse non videri,’ which means, ‘To be, not to seem.’ I am confident she will be very successful in all her future endeavors and make William Floyd proud to call her an alumna.”
Sandra attended William Floyd schools K-12 beginning with Moriches Elementary School, then William Floyd Middle School and now William Floyd High School.
This is the second consecutive year that a William Floyd High School senior has earned this award (Isabella Liu, William Floyd Class of 2017).
