Police Arrest Driver of One of Two Separate Vehicles Responsible for Brentwood Hit-and-Run Incident

Suffolk County Police on February 18 arrested one of the drivers involved in a hit-and-run that seriously injured pedestrian in Brentwood on February 11.
 
Luis A. Melendez was driving a 2006 Honda Accord when the vehicle struck Maria Ramirez at approximately 3 a.m. while she was walking at the Brentwood Road LIRR crossing and then fled the scene. Ramirez was struck by a second vehicle that also fled the scene.
 
Ramirez, 37, of Brentwood, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious injuries.
 
Third Squad detectives arrested Melendez, 54, of 23 Churchill Drive, Brentwood, and charged him with Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Physical Injury. He will be arraigned at Third District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
 
Police are still looking for the driver of the second vehicle.
