Police Deploy Taser on Bat-Wielding New Cassel Man While Responding to Domestic Disturbance

The Third Squad reports the arrest of a New Cassel man for an Assault that occurred on Monday, February 12, 2024 at 11:15 am in New Cassel.
 
According to detectives, officers responded to a Roman Avenue residence for a domestic disturbance. Upon police arrival, officers were informed that male subject, Merritt F. Benson Jr, 24, was involved in a verbal argument with a female resident, 30, in the home.  As the argument escalated, Benson caused damage to the victim’s bedroom door and began hitting the floor multiple times with a baseball bat.  
 
While responding officers attempted to place Defendant Merritt F. Benson Jr. into custody, he resisted and refused to comply with verbal commands. Officers deployed an Electronic Control Device (Taser) and police were able to place the defendant into custody.  Four officers sustained injuries during the course of the arrest, as the defendant was violent and combative. Officers were transported to a local area hospital for treatment and the defendant was also transported to the hospital for evaluation. 
 
Defendant Merritt F. Benson Jr. is charged with four (4) counts of Assault 2nd Degree, four (4) counts of Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree, Menacing 2nd Degree and Criminal Mischief 4th Degree. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
