The New Year is starting off frigidly cold on Long Island. There’s also going to be a mix of snow to follow from Winter Storm Hercules.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch which remains in effect from Thursday evening through Friday afternoon for New York.

There’s an expected accumulation of 4 to 8 inches of snow with strong winds gusting up to 40 mph in some areas of Long Island. The heaviest snow fall will take effect on Thursday from noon to midnight.

The combination of snow and wind calls for dangerous travel conditions. Single and teen digits will also be cause for slippery road conditions.

Fortunately, by Sunday temperatures are expected to go back up to the 40s and even 50s by Monday before leveling off into the 30s for the rest of the work week.

Get ready for 2014 to start off with an impact – combining frigid cold temperatures, snow and wind.
