Ocean Beach, Fire Island: A Day Trip Guide

Home » Neighborhood Guide » Fire Island » Ocean Beach

If you’re going to make a visit to Fire Island you have to visit the beautiful community of Ocean Beach, which is the largest town on Fire Island. Ocean Beach was incorporated as a village in 1921. It stands as a popular destination on Fire Island for its street festivals, shops, pubs, restaurants, nightlife, and the tranquil beach.

The barrier island runs 32-miles long and since no cars are allowed on the Island, people get around by walking, biking, and lugging wagons to transport heavier items. In fact, there’s a wagon parking lot next to the ferry dock.

A visit to Ocean Beach is an opportunity to relax and clear your mind because it is in many ways like a water paradise resort. You’ll find yourself in a timeless vacation world because there are no cars around you – only beautiful homes, birds chirping, bicycle bells ringing, and the sight of tranquility in the sea. You will be left with nothing but the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate all that is around you.

Traveling to Ocean Beach
Making your way to Ocean Beach can be done in several ways:

If you’re already on Fire Island, just take a water taxi ride over or you can also reach it by foot or bike on the inland walks.

If you’re on Long Island, make your way to Bay Shore where you can catch a ferry ride across the Great South Bay for a half-hour.

If you’re traveling from Manhattan, it’ll take you about an hour to catch the LIRR to Bay Shore and hop on the ferry from there.

From its sandy beach, tranquil waters, restaurants & pubs, boutiques & shops, to the endless outdoor activities, there’s something to do for everyone! The liveliness during the day is equally as lively at night, too!

Main Street
A walk through Main Street can be fun for kids and adults with its many mom and pop shops, boutiques, and even local children selling painted seashells souvenirs from their wagons.

Jet Skiing and Dinghy
Adventure awaits at the Ocean Beach Marina where you can jet ski or dinghy.

Children’s Playground
For the little ones who want to take a break from building sandcastles, take them to the children’s playground located in front of the community center for swings, slides, and other fun park equipment features.
