Port Jefferson had a festival last weekend (which I didn't know about until that day or I would have told you all about it.) My husband and I took our son Luc and walked around the town. We got some ice cream and sat over by the Christmas Store so Luc could run around and we could sit and enjoy our ice cream. I like to people-watch so I noticed when a man came around the corner with a young boy (about 6 or 7 years old) that was crying. The man said, "is that your Mom?" the answer was obviously "yes" as the boy ran to his Mother.
The Mother immediately started in with the boy, "where did you go?" and started to walk away with her son. The man said, "Ma'am! Ma'am!" and when she turned he said, "ya know, he was way up around the corner." She said, "yea.." and kept walking with her son. Not even a THANK YOU! The kind father had his hands full of melting ice cream cones for his own family and didn't have to take the time out to help the crying child find his Mom.
The good-Samaritan turned in disgust and walking towards his wife said, "whatever."
I've thought a lot about that moment. I've thought, "wow.. what if that was Luc that had wandered away." All you Mom's and Dad's know how easy those kids disappear. And frankly, I don't think it's as likely that "some bad man" will take off with my kid-it's the worry of having him think that I deserted him, crying for me with people standing all around uncaring and not
So.. to the gentleman that brought the boy to his Mom, THIS Mom would like to say "thank you." Please keep being the good person that you are in spite of the occasional unappreciative person you might find. I always want my son's face to be this happy.
Need something to do? Now that it's the end of September the crowds going East have calmed down. (this is when I go out east.. OFF season) Go apple picking at one of the farms! It's always a nice day (cheap day) and the kids love running around and picking apples. There are always hay rides! Click here
