Uniondale, NY - June 9, 2017 - Summer may not officially start for another couple of weeks, but that won’t stop the hot weather from coming. With temperatures approaching 90 degrees forecasted for the weekend and start of next week, PSEG Long Island is prepared and customers should be as well.

“PSEG Long Island is continually working to upgrade and maintain the energy grid to withstand extreme weather and is prepared to meet high demand during high temperatures,” said John O’Connell, Vice President of Transmission and Distribution, PSEG Long Island. “As much as we prepare, it is also important for customers to prepare themselves and their homes for high temperatures.”

As always, PSEG Long Island will address any outages as quickly and safely as possible.

During extreme heat conditions, customers should:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
  • Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
High temperatures can lead to higher electric bills, but customers can save energy and money this summer by following a few simple tips:

  • Customers can receive an incentive on qualifying thermostats for enrolling in PSEG Long Island’s Smart Savers Thermostat program, which can be used to control usage during peak summer days. Visit https://www.psegliny.com/savemoney for more details.
  • Seal holes and cracks around doors and windows with insulation or weather-stripping.
  • Don’t cool an empty house. Set your thermostat higher when you are away.
  • Ceiling fans cool fast and cost less than air conditioning.
  • Close blinds and draperies facing the sun to keep out the sun’s heat.
  • Replace air filters monthly. Dirty filters make your air conditioner work harder.
  • Use a microwave or crockpot instead of the oven. They won’t heat the house.
  • Set refrigerators and freezers to the most efficient temperatures.
  • Replace old appliances with new energy efficient ENERGY STAR® appliances.
PSEG Long Island energy efficiency programs provide residential and commercial customers with the tools needed to incorporate energy efficient practices and technologies to help lower energy usage.
