A historic Gilded Age mansion in Glen Cove, Long Island, has been listed for sale at just under $4 million, offering a rare opportunity to own a piece of the region's storied past.

Constructed around 1896, this nearly 7,600-square-foot residence was originally commissioned by Henry W. J. Bucknall, an English cork importer and early settler of Glen Cove's Red Spring Colony. Bucknall named the estate "Leahead" after his family's English manor, Lea Head. Over time, the property's original five acres have been reduced, with the gatehouse and carriage house sold off, and the second floor and turret lost to an unknown cause. Despite these changes, the mansion retains many of its original features.

The home's interior boasts a wood-paneled great room, a dining room with a limestone fireplace, coffered barrel ceiling, and stained-glass windows. A unique brass mermaid chandelier, original to the house, hangs in the great room and is included in the sale. The mansion comprises seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and a half-bathroom. Although the second floor is no longer intact, a portion of the home retains an original gabled upper level housing two bedrooms.

Situated on 1.34 acres atop a high bluff, the property offers views of the Long Island Sound and includes access to a beach below via an easement, providing opportunities for kayaking, swimming, and fishing.

Listing agent Regina Rogers of Douglas Elliman describes the dining room as "one of the most impressive and beautiful" she has seen in her 30 years of real estate experience. The current owner, an engineer and only the fifth in the home's history, undertook significant restoration work, uncovering and restoring original woodwork that had been previously concealed.

This property represents a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities, offering prospective buyers a chance to own a distinctive piece of Long Island's architectural heritage.
