Memorial Day, a federal holiday, is typical observed on the last Monday of May. Once known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, commemorating the fallen soldiers who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Some choose to visit cemeteries and memorials as a means of remembering and honoring the fallen. Others participate in parades and ceremonies held by most, if not all, of the towns on Long Island. On the lighter side of the day, Memorial Day also marks the beginning of summer, kicking off with weekend long celebrations and, most importantly, barbecues. Though the weekend weather is looking a little spotty, with threats of scattered thunderstorms on Sunday, that shouldn’t stop you from gathering with friends and family to have a good time, indoors or out. Be sure to check out these ten Memorial Day parades and ceremonies before celebrating summers arrival.
