Fishing off the shores of Long Island is an age old tradition. Myriads of fish species call the waters surrounding Long Island their home. The South Shore, from Jamaica Bay to the Great South Bay, has an extensive culture of weakfish, fluke, winter flounder and blackfish in its bays and estuaries, sometimes seeing appearances by albacore, striped bass and bluefish. Fire Island Inshore spans 32 miles from Islip to Hampton Bays. The barrier island is world famous for its top-notch fishing. On the flipside of Long Island is the Long Island Sound. The Atlantic Ocean Estuary, situated between Long Island and Connecticut is typically popular for fishing from April through October. The Sound homes such species as striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, scup, black sea bass, tautog, fluke and winter flounder. Many of Long Island’s North and South Shore port towns and marinas have fishing charters & party boats to whisk you off to a day of adventure trying to catch dinner out on the high seas.
