Holtsville, NY - December 11th, 2013 - Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash in which a disabled motorist crossing the eastbound Long Island Expressway (LIE) was struck and killed in Holtsville.

Ryan Marshall was driving a 2005 Honda CRV eastbound on the LIE when his vehicle ran out of gas between exits 62 and 63.  Marshall was crossing the eastbound lanes when he was struck at approximately 7:50 p.m. by a Suffolk County Department of Social Services (DSS) 2006 Ford minivan that was traveling east in the HOV lane.

Marshall, 24, of Chestnut Street, Coram, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.  The driver of the Ford, a 55-year-old female from Riverhead who works for DSS, was not injured and remained at the scene.

It appears that Marshall may have been trying to cross the expressway to get to a Suffolk County Highway Patrol officer that was stopped on the expressway’s center median.

The Ford was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.
