The air quality index...or aqi...was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the aqi value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated...the New York state department of health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very Young, and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. State Troopers Make Drug Arrest in Smithtown

Two individuals were found with nearly 50 grams of marijuana.

Smithtown, NY - August 12, 2014 - On 8/11/14 at 9:30 PM, a trooper from the Brentwood Barracks stopped a gray Lexus with one headlight on the southbound Sunken Meadow Parkway in Smithtown.  While interviewing the vehicle operator, Alicia Caparatta, age 29, of Northport NY, the trooper detected a strong odor of marihuana.  A search of the vehicle yielded 10 grams of marihuana, 39 grams of concentrated marihuana, and 5 narcotic pills.  
 
Ms. Caparatta and her passenger, Kenneth Taylor, age 33, of Northport, were charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance(CPCS) 4th Degree(concentrated marihuana, Class C Felony), CPCS 7th Degree(pills, A Misd.), Controlled Substance not in Original Container(violation), and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana(violation).  Ms. Caparatta was also charged with misdemeanor unlicensed operation.  Both subjects held for arraignment in Suffolk County First District Court.
