Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet shop on the Northwest Side. She began an investigation lasting 30 years that would change our understanding of the intelligence of avian species. Her research with him challenged the common belief that birds could only mimic human speech with any understanding of meaning.
