Supervisor Dan Panico and the Town Board proudly announced the remarkable success of Brookhaven Town's Amnesty program, which ran from January 1 through March 31, 2025, and provided residents with a vital opportunity to address residential permit violations. The program resulted in an overwhelming response, with 3,211 residents seizing the chance to pay violations without accruing late fines—some of which had reached up to $5,000.

The initiative saved residents more than $3.1 million in fines. The program applied to residential properties where permits had expired more than 90 days ago and incurred additional fees, or where construction had been completed without proper permits. In addition to financial relief, the program focused on ensuring that residential properties adhered to fire code compliance standards, contributing to greater safety for the community.

“This one-time program has proven to be a win-win for Brookhaven Town and our residents,” said Supervisor Panico. “Not only have we helped homeowners bring their properties into compliance and avoid substantial penalties, but we’ve also enhanced overall safety—a step that could potentially save lives in the future.”

Supervisor Panico commended the Town’s Building Division for their work throughout the program and thanked residents who participated for doing their part to ensure safety, compliance, and continued investment in Brookhaven’s neighborhoods. “This program helped preserve the integrity and value of our communities and I appreciate the dedication of our Town staff and the many residents who stepped forward to do the right thing.”

With thousands of homeowners benefiting from the Amnesty program, Brookhaven Town demonstrated its commitment to supporting residents and promoting safety throughout the community. For more details about future initiatives, visit the Town website.
