The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Long Island. Forecasters are saying the storm will start tonight with rain around 10-11pm and then change over to snow by morning, making for a very messy commute on Tuesday.

The watch is in effect from tonight until Tuesday afternoon.

A winter storm watch indicates that conditions are favorable for the particular weather event in and near the watch area, and which may pose a risk to life and property.

Depending on the track of the storm and how quickly the precipitation changes over from rain to snow, we could be in for 5 to 8 inches of snow. Wind gusts of up to 40 MPH are expected. There is also a flood warning in effect for southern Nassau County.

"Snowfall amounts will depend on how quickly rain transitions over to snow," the NWS said. "At this time, this looks to be around daybreak Tuesday."
