Do you experience problems sleeping, have difficulty relaxing, have difficulty concentrating, experience chronic pain, have headaches, or migraines? These problems are quite common in the general population and they have been treated with a variety of approaches, including medications and psychotherapy. Alternative approaches and supplemental treatments have also been available, but most people are not aware of these additional techniques. In the 1970's, I was doing research on Biofeedback training. At that time, it was considered "parapsychology," falling on the fringe of science. Since that time, it has become a mainstream treatment for problems with stress and pain. At one time, acupuncture was on the "fringe," but now it too is accepted and is covered by most insurance carriers. Recently, we came across the science of Brainwave Entrainment (BWE). We see BWE as another tool to help our patients live better lives.

What is Brainwave Entrainment (BWE)?

BWE has been researched for over 60 years. The basis for Brainwave Entrainment (BWE) is that there are 4 main brain waves that are predominant during different states of mind:

Wave Frequency Range State of Mind
Delta 0.5 Hz - 4 Hz Deep sleep
Theta 4 Hz - 8 Hz Drowsiness (also first stage
of sleep)
Alpha 8 Hz - 14 Hz Relaxed but alert
Beta 14 Hz - 30 Hz Highly alert and focused

The theory of BWE is built upon studies that found that, after a period of time, the brain appears to mimic external stimuli that are presented to the ears or eyes. Thus, if an external stimulus is applied to the brain, it becomes possible to train the brain to shift from one frequency to another. This process is called "Frequency Following Response (FFR)".

If you look at the chart, above it seems quite clear that to perform "entrainment", we would have to produce sounds that are too low to hear and impossible to produce on almost all media formats and audio machines. Therefore, to create these sounds, we have to train the brain into producing these low frequency tones. To perform this task, we use a concept called "binaural beats".

WHAT ARE BINAURAL BEATS?
When the brain is given sounds in each ear that are below 1000 Hz, and the difference in their frequency is less that 30 Hz, the brain really registers the difference between the two sounds. Therefore, if we produce a sound that is at 600 Hz in one ear and 605 Hz in the other ear, the brain registers a frequency of 5 Hz. Similarly, if we produce 600 Hz in one ear and 610 Hz in the other ear, the brain registers a frequency of 10 Hz. That is the way we can produce such low frequencies. This frequency difference is what is called a "binaural beat".

We have searched the internet and we have found several websites that offer prepackaged CD's of Brainwave Entrainment (BWE). We believe that this is not the most effective way to help people. We know that one diet does not work for everyone. Clearly, one medication does not work for every problem. So, we believe, one "cookie cutter" CD will not help everyone either. We are offering individualized CD's that will be produced to your specific needs and interests. In order to make this offer work, we cannot just send you an "off the shelf" CD. As for our own clients, we collect data and produce the CD for the individual and her or her specific needs.

If you wish to order an individually produced CD for Brainwave Entrainment, you can contact Dr. Howard Gurr at hgurr@drsgurr.com, or go to our website and click on the link called Brainwave Entrainment 2. Follow the directions to complete the questionnaire and make the payment for the CD. You will receive your CD within 2 weeks of the order.
