Long Island's own Ross Mitton has taken a significant step in his professional hockey career by signing an amateur tryout agreement (ATO) with the Bridgeport Islanders, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the New York Islanders. This move brings the Copiague Harbor native closer to home, offering local fans an exciting opportunity to follow his journey in professional hockey.

Roots in Long Island

Mitton's hockey journey began on Long Island, where he developed a passion for the sport at a young age. He attended the Portledge School, known for its strong hockey program, and played for the Long Island Royals. His time with these teams laid a solid foundation, showcasing his dedication and skill on the ice. Mitton's commitment to the sport was evident early on, as he balanced rigorous academics with an intense training schedule.

Junior Hockey Success

After his tenure on Long Island, Mitton advanced to junior hockey in the United States Hockey League (USHL), playing for teams such as the Fargo Force, Lincoln Stars, and Omaha Lancers. During his time in the USHL, he accumulated 54 points, demonstrating his offensive capabilities and adaptability. Notably, he was part of the Fargo Force's 2018 Clark Cup Championship team, highlighting his experience in high-stakes competition.

Collegiate Achievements

Mitton continued his hockey career at Colgate University, where he played for four seasons. Over 130 games, he recorded 72 points, including 26 goals and 46 assists. His senior year was particularly impressive, as he set career highs with 11 goals and 19 assists, totaling 30 points. Mitton's leadership qualities were recognized when he was named an alternate captain, and his performance earned him a spot on the ECAC Hockey All-Tournament Team.

One of the standout moments of his collegiate career came during the ECAC playoffs, where Mitton scored a double-overtime game-winning goal against top-ranked Quinnipiac, propelling Colgate to the championship game. This clutch performance underscored his ability to deliver under pressure and contributed to Colgate's first conference title in over three decades.

Graduate Season at the University of Maine

Seeking further development, Mitton transferred to the University of Maine for a graduate season. In 31 games with the Black Bears, he tallied four goals and seven assists. His experience and work ethic made him a valuable asset to the team, and he quickly became a fan favorite. Mitton's father, Herns, also became a beloved figure among Maine supporters, known for his enthusiastic presence at games.

Joining the Bridgeport Islanders

The signing of an ATO with the Bridgeport Islanders marks Mitton's entry into professional hockey.
