Woman Arrested for Manslaughter After Daughter, Age 7, Found Dead in Suffolk Hotel Pool

Suffolk County Police have announed that a Bronx woman has been arrested in connection with an incident where a 7-year-old girl was found unresponsive in a pool at a hotel in Melville in January 2022.
 
Katlyn Pineda was found unresponsive in a pool by a family member at the Marriott Melville Long Island hotel, located at 1350 Walt Whitman Road, on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at approximately 4:50 p.m.
 
Pineda, 7, of the Bronx, was transported to Plainview Hospital in critical condition. She was then transported to Cohen Children's Medical Center in Queens.
 
Following an investigation by Homicide Squad detectives, Pineda’s mother, Erica Baez, was arrested on May 15 at 7:43 p.m. on West 70th Street in Manhattan. Baez left her daughter unattended in the swimming pool on the day of the incident. 
 
Baez, 41, of 3520 Olinville Ave., Bronx, has been charged with Manslaughter 2nd Degree and two counts of Acting in a Manner Injurious to a Child. She is being held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on May 16.    
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
