Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) and Legislator Seth I Koslow (D – Merrick) applauded the Monday, May 5 approval of a contract that will advance a key roadway safety improvement project focused upon Nassau Road in Roosevelt.

The Legislature’s Rules committee voted unanimously to approve a contract between Nassau County’s Department of Public Works (DPW) and N&P Engineering, Architecture and Land Surveying PLLC for the firm to provide engineering and design services for infrastructure improvements to Babylon Turnpike from Merrick Road to Nassau Road/Main Street in the hamlets of Roosevelt and Merrick and the Incorporated Village of Freeport.

According to DPW documents, the designs will be for planned improvements that include but are not limited to streetscape beautification and entryway creation; road surfacing and traffic signal upgrades; new and repaired sidewalks, curbs and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps; bulb-outs and drainage structures, and more. This stage of the project, which has a maximum cost of $1.54 million, is being funded through capital infrastructure plan resources secured by Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé and the unified Democratic Minority caucus.

“Babylon Turnpike is one of Roosevelt and Freeport’s most important thoroughfares, and these long-awaited improvements will beautify the community and improve road safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists alike,” Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé said. “That is why I focused so closely upon securing resources to fund this project in Nassau’s capital plan, and I thank my Rules committee colleagues for bringing us one step closer to breaking ground.”

“This investment in Babylon Turnpike – an essential county road for communities across southern Nassau County – will contribute greatly toward the economic strength of local businesses and create important job opportunities throughout our region,” Legislator Koslow said. “I applaud the Rules committee for approving this contract and supporting the growth and well-being of Roosevelt, Merrick and Freeport.

Earlier this spring, the Rules committee approved a $557,040 contract with LK McLean Associated Engineering & Surveying DPC for the firm to provide engineering and design services for similar work on Nassau Road in Roosevelt between the north side of the Southern State Parkway and Pleasant Avenue.
