New York, NY - April 23, 2018 - On the evening of April 20, 2018, the New York State Police, Troop L, hosted a multi-agency enforcement detail throughout Suffolk County. The following agencies participated: New York State Police, Suffolk County Police, Suffolk County Sheriffs, Riverhead Police, Southampton Town Police, and Westhampton Beach Police.

During the detail, held on what has come to be an unofficial marijuana use holiday, police worked to crackdown on impaired driving and illegal drug use.

New York State Police Major David Candelaria stated, “The purpose of this detail was to raise public awareness that while marihuana use may be more socially acceptable today than it has been in the past, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana can have the same deadly consequences as alcohol or other drugs. Traffic safety is always a top priority and we will continue to team up with our Suffolk County law enforcement partners to make our roadways safe.”
