Lindenhurst, NY - February 8th, 2016 - Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey (R-Lindenhurst) is proud to announce that his office has joined with Long Island Cares in their effort to secure nutrition for local pets in need. As a participant in the pet food drive, McCaffrey’s district office was equipped with two large receptacles, which are now awaiting generous donations of unopened pet food items.

In recent years, Long Island Cares has become a household name for many families throughout Long Island. Through various outreach initiatives and partnerships, they have delivered much-needed nutrition to those who need it most. Additionally, they have brought attention to the fact that Long Island – despite its being a relatively prosperous region – is not immune to what is frequently referred to as food insecurity.

Unfortunately, all-to-often, food insecurity also applies to our beloved animal companions.  Whether it is dogs, cats, or other small animals – do not forget fish, reptiles, amphibians, etc. – all of these precious creatures can suffer the ill effects of malnutrition. Hence, Long Island Cares established “Baxter’s Pet Pantry” to address this heartbreaking reality.

“Our animal friends provide a lot of joy, comfort, and in some cases vital support, to countless individuals and families,” said McCaffrey. “When we come to terms with how many Long Islanders are struggling to feed their families, we must bear in mind that pets are often a part of those families.  I applaud Long Island Cares for their bringing awareness to the issue and being proactive in finding a solution.”

To learn more about the great accomplishments and initiatives of Long Island Cares, those interested are strongly encouraged to visit their website. To make a donation of unopened pet food, please visit Legislator McCaffrey’s district office on any weekday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., at 125C South Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst.
