Legislator Anker: Supporting the Fight against Cancer

Written by Long Island News & PR  |  11. June 2013

Rocky Point NY, June 2013 – On Saturday, June 8, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the American Cancer Society, survivors, and members of the community for Relay for Life at Rocky Point High School.

“I’d like to thank the volunteers who came in support of this cause,” said Legislator Anker. “It’s vital that we keep working to create awareness on the high incidence of cancer on Long Island. Half of all cancer deaths are preventable, so we must make proactive, healthy decisions.”

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the American Cancer Society, which takes part in organizing the Relay for Life movement in over 20 countries. Each year, more than 4 million people participate in the event. Relay teams camped out overnight, with team members taking turns walking or running around the high school track. The event lasts through the night in the belief that cancer never sleeps, nor should the people fighting against the disease.
