Islip, NY - September 4, 2016 - Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has announced that a 6:00 p.m. deadline has been set for the voluntary evacuation of Fire Island ahead of what is now considered post-Tropical Storm Hermine. Officials are closely monitoring the storm, which is expected to produce storm surges that could result in coastal flooding. Residents and guests on Fire Island will not be able to evacuate once conditions deteriorate and ferries cease operating.

“We understand that Labor Day weekend is an important event for many tourists, families, and local businesses, but we have a responsibility to make the public aware of the dangers posed by this storm,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Weather conditions will make emergency response extremely difficult for anyone in need of assistance while on Fire Island. Wind gusts are expected up to 44 mph, and coastal residents should expect extreme high tides. All Town pools and beaches will remain closed until further notice.
