Many towns, villages, and counties have historical societies. These societies have museums, and other resources. It could include a map of the town, or note a trail to hike and see significant monuments. The historical societies are also great resources because the people who work there should really understand the local area, and they can be resources on everything from long-established places to eat, to things off the beaten path that most tourists might not get to see and experience.
