With the New Year only a couple of hours away, locals are beginning their travels to and from New York City for their New Year’s Eve celebrations. As restaurants and different venues prepare themselves for the rush of crowds for the annual New Year’s Eve Celebration in Times Square, the LIRR is also preparing for the holiday travel. The MTA has announced that it is adding dozens of trains to the Long Island Rail Road's normal schedule to accommodate for the crowds of people who will be traveling.

To help locals get to their destinations easier and a little quicker on New Year’s Eve, eleven additional early-afternoon eastbound trains from Penn Station will be running as well as 20 additional late-afternoon and early-evening westbound trains into Penn Station and the Atlantic Terminal. The next day, Wednesday, January 1st, the LIRR will be running on a holiday schedule with 18 additional early-morning eastbound trains leaving Penn Station and the Atlantic Terminal.

Four additional trains will also be running from Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal to accommodate for the fans who will be leaving Billy Joel New Year’s Eve Concert at Barclays Center.

In addition, the LIRR is banning alcohol on the trains from 12 PM on New Year’ Eve through 12 PM on New Year’s Day to ensure safety during travel. The ban will be enforced by MTA police.

The MTA is also preparing for the winter weather conditions heading our way by salting platforms on Subways, chaining buses, and getting snow plows ready to plow and salt the tunnels and bridges.

For additional information, travelers can call the LIRR’s Customer Service Call Center at 511 or visit their website. Safe travels!
