Woman Arrested for DWI with 2 Young Children in Vehicle After Crash Left Car Overturned on Christmas, One Child Seriously Injured

Suffolk County Police have arrested a woman for driving while intoxicated with two young children in her vehicle, following a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured her niece.

Latanya Mowatt, 25, of Deer Park was driving while intoxicated with her 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old niece in the car. One child was ejected when the vehicle overturned.

Bay Shore, NY - December 26, 2015 - Suffolk County Police have arrested a woman for driving while intoxicated with two young children in her vehicle, following a motor vehicle crash that seriously injured her niece.

Latanya Mowatt was operating a 2004 Nissan Maxima southbound on Brookdale Avenue when she apparently lost control of the vehicle, and struck a utility pole and two unoccupied parked vehicles. Her vehicle then overturned and her six-year-old niece was ejected. Mowatt and her two passengers were transported by ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. Mowatt and her 8-year-old daughter suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The 6-year-old suffered serious internal injuries.

Mowatt, 25, of Deer Park, was arrested and charged with DWI, Aggravated DWI (Leandra’s Law) and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. The investigation is continuing.
