Suffolk County to Hold Classes Helping Smokers Quit

Written by Eric Anderson  |  27. December 2013

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services announced on Friday that it will be holding classes in 2014 to help resident quit smoking. Seminars will be lead by a trained advisor, and will be free for all Suffolk County residents.

“We want the people of Suffolk County to be as healthy as they can be,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Our tobacco cessation program is a great resource available to all county residents who wish to be successful in their resolve to quit smoking and to live longer, healthier lives.”

The programs will begin in early January, just as many Long Islanders begin to fulfill their New Year’s resolutions.

The classes are being held following a study that was published online on December 20, 2013. The study was conducted by the Society for the Study of Addiction. It found that people who used a combination of specialized behavioral support, anti-smoking medicine or nicotine replacement products to try quitting are three times more likely to be successful than those who try to quit on their own.

Although the classes are free to Suffolk County residents, there is a fee for anti-smoking medication and nicotine replacements.
