Police: Rockville Centre Teen Involved in Alcohol-Fueled Vehicle Crash with Underage Passenger

Ryan Powers, 17, is being charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Leandra’s Law), cops say.

Oceanside, NY - December 26, 2017 - The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a Rockville Centre man for Driving While Intoxicated-Leandra’s Law that occurred on Monday, December 25, 2017 at 6:28 p.m. in Oceanside.
According to police, 911 received a call for an auto accident on Oceanside Rd. Upon arrival, police observed a gray 2005 Nissan Maxima sideways in the middle of the street. The operator, Ryan Powers, 17, was found nearby. He was identified as the driver by witnesses. The officers observed the defendant to have bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Defendant Powers was placed under arrest without incident. The defendant was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. No injuries were reported.
The defendant had a 15 year-old old male in the passenger seat of the car at the time of the accident, who was released to a relative.
The defendant is being charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated-Leandra’s Law, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Driving While Intoxicated. He will be arraigned on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at First District Court, Hempstead.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
