Mother Killed, Daughter Critically Injured in Yaphank Vehicle Crash, Officials Report

Yaphank, NY - December 26, 2017 - Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a crash that killed one pedestrian and critically injured another in Yaphank on Saturday, December 23.
 
A woman was driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra eastbound on Horseblock Road when she struck two pedestrians who stepped into the roadway at approximately 5:05 p.m. One of the pedestrians, Myshirra High-Cortes of Brentwood, 31, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where she was pronounced dead. Her daughter, Jayla Cortes, 7, was also transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center before being transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.
 
The driver of the Hyundai, a 60-year-old resident of Shirley, New York, was not injured. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. No criminal charges have been filed.
