Long Island, NY - December 19, 2017 - At a scheduled court conference in Central Islip this morning, a former police officer pleaded guilty to causing a wrong-way fatal crash on Sunrise Highway in September of 2016.

Robert Scheuerer of Farmingdale pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter in the second degree, aggravated DWI and reckless endangerment in the second degree. The head-on collision in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway, east of the New York State Route 231 overpass, killed Brian J. Fusaro, 37, of Bay Shore.

The crash occurred on the morning of September 27, 2016 at approximately 4:40 am.

Scheuerer’s blood-alcohol reading was .17 in a blood sample taken one hour and fourteen minutes after the crash.

In exchange for his guilty plea, State Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho promised Scheuerer a prison term of three to nine years. The District Attorney’s Office recommended a sentence of four to twelve years of incarceration.

Justice Camacho directed the defendant to surrender on January 18 to begin his sentence.

Scheuerer, 26, worked as a Suffolk County police officer for a year prior to the crash. He was dismissed by the department in January of this year.
