When it comes to your senses, our vision is one of the very most important aspects of our lives; and when it comes to taking proper care of your peepers, there’s no better place to take them than SightMD.

Currently, SightMD boasts 38 locations situated throughout all of Long Island, as well as parts of New York City and Westchester, and their stated goal is to be the greatest eye care company the world has ever seen. To that end, they are the only practice in the entire region that has every sub-specialty of ophthalmology, ranging from LASIK, cataracts, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, ophthalmic plastic surgery, cornea, complete eye care, and much more.

Dr. Jeffrey Martin is the co-founder and president of SightMD, and has 22 years of experience in ophthalmology. He said that he was inspired to get into this medical specialty by his father, who founded his own practice in 1960; Martin went on to eventually join his father’s office in 1998.

“When I was a little kid, I used to ride my bicycle over to my dad’s office and just watch him do things…I’ve been around it my entire life and I found it intriguing,” he said. “Not just the micro-surgery and LASIK and the results and everything, but the relationships that you form with patients is the utmost to us. That commitment to our patients has taken us in directions that no one else has gone.”

The commitment that Martin speaks of takes the form of a ‘above and beyond’ attitude that you often don’t encounter in the medical field. SightMD is open 7 days a week and features a 24-hour call center, ensuring that if any of their patients are ever in need, someone will be there to help.

“We have scheduled office hours every day of the week, even on Sundays, and our patients really appreciate that,” Martin said. “Also, we answer our own phones 24/7, as opposed to an answering service that may not know who you are. It’s all about making sure our patients have the best care possible.”

SightMD is the result of the 2017 merger of Martin’s practice with that of Dr. John Passarelli; at the time, these were the two largest practices in Suffolk County, and once joined, their upward trajectory continued.

“Dr. Passarelli was an early innovator in ophthalmology, having the first surgery center approved in New York State,” Martin said. “He and I became friendly and associated as time went on, and we eventually merged the two practices to become what we are today.”

When you visit SightMD, you can be assured that you’re not only visiting a vision specialist that stays abreast of the current techniques and technology in the ophthalmology field, but one that actively breaks ground in it as well.

“We have our own dedicated research department run by Director of Research Dr. Alanna Nattis,” Martin said. “We’re currently leading about 12 research projects, so not only are we dedicated to delivering the very best for our patients, but we also are very involved in developing the latest technology and techniques in ophthalmology.”

SightMD’s developments and discoveries are published in peer-reviewed journals, ensuring that they advance breakthroughs in the field for all to use.

As far as the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Martin noted that SightMD never closed their doors on their patients; many locations remained open through the worst of it, with all of them adhering strictly to all CDC guidelines in terms of cleaning, sanitizing, mask-wearing and social distancing in order to keep both patients and staff safe and healthy.

“People still have problems during a pandemic, and we didn’t want our patients developing simple conjunctivitis and having to go to a hospital ER and then catching something much worse,” he said. “So we kept several branches open during the pandemic, and our patients really appreciated that.”

In the end, Martin said that he feels a great deal of pride when it comes to the care and respect that SightMD gives its patients; it’s a strict standard of care that he says the practice will always endeavor to maintain, no matter how large they grow.

“The bottom line is that no matter how large the practice grows, I want to focus on our vision, which is to be greatest eye care company the world has ever seen,” he said. “We have a strong utilization review program for our physicians to make sure everyone is doing the right things, so it’s not about size, it’s about quality.”

“My legacy, I hope, will be that we created a super-high quality ophthalmology network that puts patients first,” Martin concluded. “I want our patients leaving saying ‘Wow! That was amazing!’ We just want to be super-focused on customer service. That’s the future of medicine.”
