Two Young Pedestrians and Officer Injured after Two-Vehicle Crash

Deer Park, NY - December 15, 2014 - Suffolk County Police First Precinct detectives are investigating a two-car crash that injured two boys and a police officer in Deer Park this evening.

At approximately 6:40 p.m. a Second Precinct Police Officer was returning from an assignment and traveling northbound on Deer Park Avenue when his vehicle was struck by a southbound Toyota Camry. The Toyota made a left turn in front of the police vehicle at the intersection of Lake Avenue and struck the police car.  The police unit was then propelled onto the sidewalk where it struck two boys, cousins, who were with an adult waiting to cross the street to go to a nearby pizzeria.

John Flores, 8, of Hicksville, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was listed in stable condition with a soft tissue injury.  Gerardo Melendez, 12, of Hicksville, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was listed in stable condition with an di
solated ankle injury. Jose Flores, John’s father and Gerardo’s uncle, was not injured.

The police officer suffered a non-life-threatening concussion.  The driver of the Toyota Syed Tirmizi, 55, of Dix Hills, was not injured.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks as the investigation is continuing. Detectives ask anyone with information regarding this crash to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
