Long Island, NY - December 12, 2017 - The William Floyd High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) recently added several more awards to their trophy case as they put forth a great performance at a regional drill competition held in Bethel High School in Bethel, Connecticut, in late November. Under the leadership of Commander Jay Tweed (USN/Ret.) and Senior Chief Dwight Becherer (USN/Ret.), the cadets earned first place in two categories: Unarmed Drill and Marksmanship, as well as a second place award for First-Year Cadets in Academics. Cadet LCDR Jordan Cooper also earned the Top Shooter Award and the entire unit received the Sportsmanship Award. Next up for the cadets is the Annual Military Inspection on December 14 and another drill competition here on Long Island.
The William Floyd High School NJROTC is no stranger to accolades as they received the “Distinguished Unit” Award for NJROTC Area 4 twice in the last three years, an honor which is among the highest designations a unit can receive. Additionally, they have garnered seven Unit Achievement Awards over the past 11 years. There are 62 JROTC units in Area 4, which comprises the northeastern part of the United States – Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island – as well as units in Italy and Spain.
