Great Neck, NY - December 11th, 2014 - Researchers at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research are seeking volunteers for Project MOTION, a study of brief treatments for either “problem” or heavy drinking being conducted at the Center for Addiction Services and Psychotherapy Interventions Research (CASPIR), the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced on December 2nd.

The ongoing study needs individuals who would like to reduce their drinking but not quit altogether.  Psychotherapy has been established as successful in helping people to reduce their drinking and this study looks into exactly why -- and how -- it works.

“About half of problem drinkers fail to respond to one of the most well-validated therapies for problem drinking,” says Jon Morgenstern, Ph.D., the study’s principal investigator. “If we can understand more about what specific components of the treatment make it work as well as why those components work, we may be able to offer improved treatments for people looking to reduce their drinking.”

The nine-month commitment will include four sessions of psychotherapy and participants will complete four assessments during the study treatment phase. They will be asked to follow up with three more assessments after their study treatment is concluded.  In addition to in-person assessments and treatment sessions, participants will be asked to complete an online daily survey over seven weeks.

Researchers are gauging how participants are faring at various stages of the study. They will begin prior to study treatments and individuals will be monitored throughout the treatment and at the end. They will then check back in six months.

People interested in participating can call Marie or Patricia at 516-837-1677 or email caspir@nshs.edu.
