Runaway Horse Killed in Crash with Tractor Trailer; Two Horses Missing

Suffolk County Police are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a horse in Center Moriches early this morning.

Center Moriches, NY - December 11th, 2014 - Suffolk County Police are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a horse in Center Moriches early this morning.

A 2005 Peterbilt tractor trailer was traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway, one half mile west of Exit 59, when it struck and killed a runaway horse that was standing in the roadway at approximately 2:50 a.m. The male driver of the tractor trailer, 60, remained at the scene and was uninjured.

Two additional horses were seen in the vicinity of the crash and are still missing. The owner of the horses, from the Double “D” Bar Ranch in Manorville, was contacted and continues the search for the two remaining horses. It is unknown how the horses escaped.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the incident or the missing horses is asked to call 911 immediately. All calls will be kept confidential.
