Stryker Hip Claims Number Nearly 400 in Federal Court, Notes Stryker Hip Implant Recall Information Center

New York, NY - December 10th, 2013 - There are now about 400 Stryker hip claims pending in federal court in Minnesota, according to court documents. The Stryker Hip Implant Recall Information Center, which offers free Stryker case reviews, goes into further detail about the recent increase in Stryker lawsuits.

The Stryker hip claims involve two of the company’s recalled metal-on-metal hip implant products, the Rejuvenate and the ABG II. Claims against Stryker include allegations of device failure, pain and metal poisoning (“metallosis”), according to court documents (In re: Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation; MDL-2441, U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota).

The Stryker Hip Implant Recall Information Center notes that the federal consolidation (formally known as a “multidistrict litigation”) was formed only about six months ago, and therefore further increases in the number of consolidated cases are not at all unlikely.

News of additional lawsuits filed follows Stryker’s fall 2013 announcement that it will set aside between $700 million and $1.1 billion for metal-on-metal hip-related litigation, according to an Oct. 23 Wall Street Journal report.* Stryker recalled the metal-on-metal hip implants in July 2012.

Stryker is not the only metal-on-metal hip implant manufacturer to set aside a significant sum of money for litigation expenses. Johnson & Johnson recently agreed to pay more than $2.5 billion to settle potentially more than 8,000 lawsuits over its embattled DePuy ASR hip implants, according to the Wall Street Journal.*
